Snorkeling
Our fleet is fully equipped with all safety and rescue gear to make your boat trip enjoyable and stress-free.
Snorkeling gear, including fins and masks, is provided for all guests and thoroughly sanitized after every excursion.
The best snorkeling spots and areas to observe marine life are where sandy seabeds alternate with rocky outcrops and posidonia meadows. These habitats provide fish with food, shelter, and breeding grounds.
Top snorkeling stops include La Mezzaluna, with its coastal inlets, Lucchese, famous for its marine caves, La Tonnara, between San Pietro and Piana islands, and the Mangiabarche lighthouse. The seabeds near Giunco and Guidi beaches in Carloforte, as well as Sottotorre, La Salina, and Grande beaches on Sant’Antioco, are excellent for spotting schools of mullet and salpa.
Common species you may encounter include gilt-head bream, sea bream, damsels, wrasses, salpa, and small castagnoles. Occasionally, octopus, cuttlefish, sole, gilt-head bream, and young sea bass may also appear.
Aperitif and lunch on board
The boat trip includes an on-board lunch featuring a starter of crostini with local grey mullet bottarga and courgettes, Genoese focaccia with ricotta mustia and Sulcis artichokes, a first course of traditional cassulli from Carloforte — a fresh pasta prepared with pesto, Sant'Antioco cherry tomatoes, onion and Mediterranean bluefin tuna — followed by fruit and local wine. In the afternoon, we will carefully choose a quiet cove for a refreshing aperitif with snacks and the renowned wine of the Sulcis islands.
P.S. The menu may vary depending on the season and some of the dishes listed may not always be available.
The boat experience
Our tour begins in the morning from the port of Calasetta, sailing through the clear waters of the Sulcis Archipelago towards the island of San Pietro—a stretch of sea where small groups of dolphins are sometimes spotted.
Upon reaching the village of Carloforte, we follow its seafront westward, passing over the stunning emerald shoals of Giunco and Girin beaches, up to Punta Nera, famous for its sheltered cove and the ruins of an old mining well perched on the dark cliff.
Thanks to the low sides of the traditional bilancella boats, we sail close to the water, moving at a gentle pace that allows us to fully appreciate the wild landscape of the coast, dominated by rocky cliffs and Mediterranean scrub.
Soon, we encounter San Pietro’s most famous beach: La Bobba. This fine sandy strip lies within a bay of incredibly clean and transparent water, making it an ideal spot for a swim break.
The itinerary continues to one of the island’s most iconic sights, the highly photographed natural monument Le Colonne: a pair of ignimbrite monoliths rising from the sea to a height of 16 meters. In 2013, the smaller monolith was toppled by a violent storm, leaving only its base visible.
Heading north, the bay of Lucchese (Lûcaise in Tabarchino) surprises us with its sinuous white limestone cliffs streaked with ochre volcanic rock. At their base are caves accessible with snorkel gear. This is a unique geosite in Sardinia, formed 16 million years ago by underwater hot springs.
Another must-see stop is the majestic Miocene cliff of La Mezzaluna, formed by volcanic eruptions that deposited ash and glowing rocks on the seabed up to 20 meters high. The boat sails just below the cliff, stopping in front of the famous caves known as La Mezzaluna caves, which, according to old fishermen’s tales, were once frequented by the Mediterranean monk seal.
Throughout the Sulcis Archipelago, the sea is exceptionally clean and transparent. Our tours pass both over shallow sandy bottoms and through rocky and posidonia-rich areas, offering excellent snorkeling opportunities. When we arrive at the secluded bay of Le Spine, surrounded by an incredible silence broken only by the call of the Eleonora’s falcon, the boat seems to float suspended on the water.
After lunch, we head north to the breathtaking Capo Sandalo lighthouse. If weather and sea conditions allow, we continue to the wild and rugged Cala Fico inlet, home to falcons, seagulls, and cormorants, and designated a permanent protected area by LIPU.
Other possible stops include La Tonnara and Spalmatore Cove, two beautiful spots that our captain happily adds to the itinerary when wind, currents, and mood permit adjustments.
Please note: the captain chooses the best route each day to find the calmest seas and most sheltered bays; some stops may vary.
